Expert Guide to Completing the Vietnam E-Visa Application Form

Updated: Oct 9

To apply for an e-visa, you must complete an online application form through the Vietnam Immigration Department. Click here for the official government link ( https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/)

Each form is for one applicant only, unless the accompanying child is included in your passport (some countries allow you to add children to your passport book). That means if your child has her own passport, you must apply for a separate e-visa for her.

Most nationalities need a visa for Vietnam, but not all. Check the Vietnam Embassy's official website in your country if you're unsure. Dual passport holders with one country exempt from a visa don’t need to apply. For example, a dual citizen of Australia and the U.K. can enter Vietnam without a visa since U.K. citizens are exempt.

Guide to Completing the Vietnam E-Visa Application Form

QUICK TIPS:

  • Although the e-visa typically takes three business days, I recommend applying at least one month in advance for peace of mind.

  • It’s recommended to fill out the form using a computer.

  • Only fill out the mandatory fields (marked with an asterisk). The instructions below refer to these fields.

  • Triple-check your information before submitting. If your information is incorrect due to your mistake, you will have to apply and pay for a new e-visa.

Step-by-Step Guide to the Vietnam E-Visa Application Form

1. Upload Documents:

Upload scans of your passport and e-visa photo in .jpg format. Each file should not exceed 2MB.

  • Passport: Only scan the data page of your passport, not the signature page. I use the Office Lens app on my phone for scanning documents.

  • Portrait Photo: You do not need a professional passport photo for the Vietnam e-visa. Simply take a picture of yourself with a phone while following best practices for a passport/visa photo (e.g., a light background, minimal shadows, uncovered head). Use 123passportphoto.com if you’re unsure about the proportions. I’ve used this program for almost 20 years to create high-quality passport photos for my whole family, and saved a lot of money along the way.

2. Full Name:

Locate the fields for Surname and Given Name(s) on your passport data page, and use this information to fill out the Surname and Given Name fields on the e-visa form. If your name is hyphenated, replace the hyphen with a space.

3. Sex:

Select your gender (Male or Female) as indicated on your passport.

4. Date of Birth:

Input your date of birth in DD/MM/YYYY format, as shown on your passport.

5. Current Nationality:

Select your nationality based on the passport you are using to enter Vietnam.

6. Religion:

You can state your current religion (if applicable) or write “NONE.”

7. Email:

Enter an email address that you frequently check.

8. Passport Number:

Provide your exact passport number.

9. Type of Passport:

Select the type of passport; it’s usually “Ordinary.”

10. Expiry Date:

Enter your passport’s expiry date in DD/MM/YYYY format.

11. Intended Date of Entry:

Choose your intended entry date to Vietnam in DD/MM/YYYY format. This doesn’t need to be your exact arrival date, and you must enter Vietnam on or after this date. I recommend adding a few days before your arrival just in case plans change.

12. Intended Length of Stay:

Choose the maximum length of stay allowed based on your nationality (up to 90 days for certain countries). You can always leave before your visa expires.

13. Purpose of Entry:

Select the appropriate purpose from the list; the default is “Tourism.”

14. Intended Temporary Residential Address in Vietnam:

Provide the address of your first accommodation. Use Google Maps and copy the exact address. It’s okay to change accommodation later. You will see that the address won’t even be included on the official e-visa.

15. City/Province:

Enter the city or province that corresponds to your intended temporary address in Vietnam.

16. Allowed to Enter Through Checkpoint:

Select your port of entry. Be sure of your choice, as your e-visa will only be valid for this checkpoint.

17. Exit Through Checkpoint:

Select the checkpoint through which you plan to exit Vietnam.

Payment

The cost for each e-visa is US$25 for single entry and US$50 for multiple entry. The cost is quoted in USD, but you will pay in VND. Use a bank card that doesn’t charge a foreign transaction fee if you have one.

Sometimes, the payment may not go through. If this happens, try using a different card. A common issue is when the name on the card does not match the applicant’s name, and payment is stopped for security reasons. Using a card with the applicant’s name will resolve this problem.

What to Do After Completing Your Vietnam E-Visa Online Form

After filling out the form, submit it to the Vietnam Immigration Department. You will receive a Verification Code, which is crucial for checking your e-visa status and downloading your e-visa letter later. Save this code in case you don't receive a confirmation email from the system.

After three working days, you can check the status of your application at this link. If approved, download and print your e-visa for immigration customs. You must bring a hard copy of your e-visa for check-in and customs.

Be sure to triple-check your approved e-visa to make sure all information is correct. Do this as soon as possible to allow time for potential amendment.
